The surviving cover shows age-related discoloration, visible wear, binding holes, and two remnants of aged tape over the top and bottom holes. These characteristics belong to the physical artifact and are retained in the archival reproduction. Two inscriptions appear on the cover: a handwritten name and address in blue ink, "Charles Gierse" and "1118 N. Main," at the top center, and a faint penciled name, "Henry Schremp," written vertically along the left margin beside the binding holes.

Poplar Bluff photographer and the named copyright claimant of the 1892 souvenir booklet. Kennedy operated a photographic studio in Poplar Bluff and also appears in the local city directories of the period.

Souvenir view books were a thriving late nineteenth-century American publishing form. Local photographers supplied images of a town's streets, buildings, and institutions, a commercial printer such as The Albertype Co. of New York reproduced them as photographic plates, and the finished booklet was sold or given away as a keepsake and a promotional portrait of the community.

Souvenir of Poplar Bluff, Mo. belongs to that tradition. Published in 1892 and copyrighted by Poplar Bluff photographer Walter H. Kennedy, it preserves a visual record of the town during the late nineteenth century, a period of rapid growth following the arrival of the railroad. The imprint of The Albertype Co. identifies it as a professionally reproduced photographic publication rather than a locally printed pamphlet.

The surviving copy is preserved by the Poplar Bluff Museum. The museum loaned the physical booklet to Historic Poplar Bluff in January 2026 so that it could be photographed page by page, and the resulting digital reproduction is maintained by Historic Poplar Bluff from the museum's copy.

An inscription written on the cover reads "Charles Gierse" and "1118 N. Main." Gierse was associated with Gierse's Cleaning and Pressing, a business listed in a 1926 Poplar Bluff city directory, and the address corresponds to the North Main Street location recorded with that name. The inscription suggests a possible connection between Gierse and this particular copy. Its original ownership history has not been confirmed, and the inscription is recorded here as a physical feature of the artifact rather than as proof of ownership.
