Historic Poplar Bluff (historicpoplarbluff.com) is a community history and preservation project dedicated to documenting and sharing the heritage of Poplar Bluff and Butler County, Missouri. It is operated by Ozark Riverways Crafts & Gifts, LLC, a Missouri limited liability company.
2. Information We Collect
When you create an account or use this site, we may collect:
- Account information: your name and email address provided at registration.
- Public display name: an optional name you choose for public-facing contributions.
- Usage data: pages visited, features used, and interactions with the AI Archivist chat feature.
- Submitted content: stories, photos, family history, and comments you voluntarily submit.
- Payment information: processed securely by Stripe; we do not store card numbers on our servers.
- Cookies and local storage: used to maintain your session and preferences.
3. How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect to:
- Provide and improve site features, including the AI Archivist chat.
- Display your contributed content (stories, photos, comments) on the site.
- Process subscription payments and manage your account access level.
- Send occasional project updates if you have opted in.
- Understand how the site is being used in order to improve the research archive.
We do not sell your personal information to third parties.
4. Public Display Name & Contributed Content
If you submit stories, photos, comments, or other content, your chosen public display name (or your initials if no display name is set) may appear alongside that content. Your email address is never displayed publicly. You may update your public display name at any time from your account page.
Content you submit may be reviewed before publication. By submitting content, you grant Historic Poplar Bluff a non-exclusive, royalty-free license to display, archive, and share that content in connection with the project's preservation mission.
5. The AI Archivist (Speak with the Archives)
The AI Archivist feature uses your questions to query our archive database and generate responses. Questions you ask may be logged (without personally identifiable information beyond your account ID) to help us improve the archive and identify research gaps. Questions are not used to train external AI models.
Free accounts are limited to one AI Archivist question per day. Supporter subscriptions provide unlimited access.
6. Third-Party Services
We use the following third-party services that may process data on your behalf:
- Stripe — payment processing. See stripe.com/privacy.
- Base44 — application hosting and authentication infrastructure.
- Supabase — file and media storage.
- Anthropic / Claude — AI language model powering the Archivist chat. See anthropic.com/privacy.
7. Data Retention
We retain your account information for as long as your account is active. Submitted content may be retained indefinitely as part of the historical archive. You may request deletion of your account and associated personal data by contacting us.

You have the right to:
- Access the personal information we hold about you.
- Correct inaccurate information (name, display name).
- Request deletion of your account and personal data.
- Opt out of non-essential communications.

9. Terms of Use
By using this site you agree to:

- Not submit content that is defamatory, harassing, or violates another person's privacy.
- Not attempt to circumvent access controls, rate limits, or payment requirements.
- Represent truthfully that you have the right to share any content you submit (photos, documents, family histories).
We reserve the right to remove content or suspend accounts that violate these terms.
10. Donations & Subscriptions
Donations made through this site are not tax-deductible. Historic Poplar Bluff is a private project, not a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Supporter subscriptions are billed monthly and may be cancelled at any time; no refunds are issued for partial billing periods.
11. Children's Privacy
This site is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us.
12. Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated date. Continued use of the site after changes constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
