Did You Know?

The 1898 Poplar Bluff Republican Holiday Supplement published a photograph of the Bank of Poplar Bluff alongside its neighbor H.E. Johnson Drugs and Jewelry — one of the earliest known photographic records of a Poplar Bluff bank building.

The Story

The Bank of Poplar Bluff was one of the leading financial institutions in Southeast Missouri during the late 19th century and played a major role in the commercial development of Poplar Bluff and Butler County.

Organized under Missouri banking laws in 1886, the institution was described in the December 8, 1898 Poplar Bluff Republican Holiday Supplement as standing "pre-eminent" among regional banking houses. The bank served both the growing business community and the agricultural economy surrounding Poplar Bluff during a period of rapid railroad and industrial expansion.

By 1898, the bank reported impressive financial figures for a regional Missouri town:

  • Capital Stock: $50,000
  • Surplus & Undivided Profits: $20,000
  • Approximate Annual Deposits: $200,000

These figures reflect Poplar Bluff's rapid economic growth during the railroad era and speak to the bank's central role in the commercial life of the region.

The publication emphasized the bank's reputation for integrity, professionalism, and public confidence, describing its officers as "a class of gentlemen who are leaders in their different lines of business" and noting that they held "the entire confidence of the county at large, each and every official being a gentleman of sterling probity and business integrity."

The bank operated from a modern brick building — photographed and published in the 1898 supplement — equipped with the "latest and most approved banking appliances," reflecting Poplar Bluff's emergence as a modern commercial center in Southeast Missouri.

The institution transacted what the article called "a general banking business such as is carried on by a first-class metropolitan banking house," serving both the urban business community and the surrounding farming classes as a money depository and medium of exchange.
