Poplar Bluff Carnegie Library

Carnegie-funded public library that served Poplar Bluff from 1915 to 1937 and beyond.

The Story

The Poplar Bluff Public Library was established as a Carnegie Library, funded by industrialist Andrew Carnegie's philanthropic foundation, which built over 2,500 libraries across the United States. The cornerstone building for the library was completed in 1915, representing a major investment in public education and literacy in the community. The library served under the Carnegie building designation from 1915 to 1937, though the building continued in use until it was replaced in 1980. The 1936 building that eventually replaced it was renovated in 1998 and remains in use. The old Carnegie building site was later used for the Art Center.

What's There Now

A new library building was constructed in 1936 (replacing the Carnegie structure by 1980), renovated in 1998, and continues to serve the community. The original Carnegie site later became the Art Center.
