Did You Know?
Wheatley School served not just as a school for grades 1-12, but as the social and community center for Poplar Bluff's African-American community.
The Story
Wheatley Public School was built in 1928 to serve Poplar Bluff's African-American community. Designed by the architectural firm Bonsack & Pearce, Inc. and constructed by contractor J.J. Miller, the school replaced a modest 1901 one-room schoolhouse.
The new school was a significant upgrade, serving students in grades 1 through 12. Beyond its educational function, Wheatley Public School became a major social and community center for the African-American community in Poplar Bluff, hosting events, gatherings, and serving as a focal point for community life during the era of segregation.
The school is listed on the National Register of Historic Places for both its educational history and its significance to African-American heritage in Poplar Bluff. It stands as a testament to the community's commitment to education and self-determination during a challenging period in American history.
