About this postcard

Colorized photochrome postcard showing the United States Post Office in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, a neoclassical stone building with a prominent pediment supported by four classical columns. The building sits on a raised foundation with stone staircases leading to a central entrance. 'UNITED STATES POST OFFICE' is engraved in the stone above the columns, and an American flag flies from a pole atop the pediment. A vintage red open-top automobile is parked on the street in the foreground, and a figure is visible on the sidewalk to the right. Adjacent brick structures are partially visible on either side. This was Poplar Bluff's early federal post office building, a civic landmark in the downtown area. The neoclassical architecture reflected the federal government's presence in the young city during the lumber-boom era.
