Building the Poplar Bluff High School Yearbook Archive
By Historic Poplar Bluff
Nearly 3,000 people are now searchable across four editions of *The Bluff*, including the first yearbook digitized from the Historic Poplar Bluff physical collection.
Historic Poplar Bluff began its yearbook project with a fairly simple goal: make the people found within old Poplar Bluff High School yearbooks easier to find.
A yearbook contains far more local history than its senior portraits. Its pages preserve teachers, businesses, clubs, athletic teams, organizations, occupations, advertisements, school activities and thousands of small connections between people who lived in Poplar Bluff.
The problem is that most of those connections remain hidden until someone happens to turn to the right page.
Our developing Poplar Bluff High School Yearbook Archive is an attempt to change that.
Today, the archive contains 2,969 individuals across four editions of *The Bluff*. Names and accompanying information have been extracted from the yearbooks and incorporated into a searchable collection, allowing researchers to look across multiple volumes rather than searching each book page by page.
Our First Complete Digital Yearbook
August 2026 marked another step for the project.
Historic Poplar Bluff completed the digitization of an original 1929 edition of *The Bluff* held in our own physical collection.
Unlike the other yearbooks currently indexed through the project, this volume began with the actual book on our desk.
The surviving copy formerly belonged to Paul C. Hays Jr., and his handwritten ownership inscription remains inside the volume. That provenance became particularly meaningful as our research into the Hays family revealed connections with several other areas of Poplar Bluff history, including downtown businesses, Hays Music Store, the State Bank of Poplar Bluff and the Rodgers Theatre.
It is a good example of what we hope the larger Historic Poplar Bluff archive can eventually accomplish: a name found in one source begins connecting with photographs, buildings, businesses, families and records found elsewhere.
Preserving the Book, Not Just Its Information
We could have simply extracted the names and photographs from the 1929 yearbook. Instead, we wanted to preserve the physical volume as faithfully as practical.
All 118 pages were individually scanned and assembled into a complete archival PDF.
The pages remain as they appear in the surviving book. Handwriting, signatures, inscriptions, discoloration, wear and other evidence of the volume's history have been retained wherever practical. The historical pages themselves have not been watermarked or rewritten.
OCR has been added to the digital edition to improve accessibility and searching, although—as with most historical printed material—automated text recognition is not always perfect.
We also created a catalog record for the volume documenting its title, date, institution, physical ownership, former ownership, digitization date and Historic Poplar Bluff archive identification.
The complete digital reproduction is available both for online viewing and as a downloadable archival PDF, allowing researchers to experience the yearbook as a complete volume rather than only through our extracted database.
Where the Other Yearbooks Come From
Historic Poplar Bluff does not physically own every yearbook currently represented in the searchable collection.
Several editions have been indexed using digitized yearbooks already made accessible through the Poplar Bluff Library's genealogy resources. Those volumes remain credited to the Library as the source of the digital material used in our project.
We believe that distinction is important.
Our goal is not to obscure where historical material originated, but to build connections between resources that already exist while also preserving new material as it enters the Historic Poplar Bluff collection.
The 1929 volume represents the first yearbook for which Historic Poplar Bluff can preserve the entire chain—from the surviving physical artifact, through digitization and cataloging, to searchable names and connections within our online archive.
2,969 People — and Growing
Across the four yearbooks currently indexed, 2,969 individuals can now be searched through the Historic Poplar Bluff Yearbook Archive.
Those records can contain much more than a name. Depending upon what appeared in the original yearbook, an entry may include activities, clubs, athletics, occupations, organizations or other details.
The work is not finished.
Historical typography can be difficult for OCR systems to interpret. Names must sometimes be corrected. Photographs and captions can be challenging to associate accurately, particularly as yearbook layouts change from page to page. Duplicate people appearing across different years must eventually be recognized and connected.
In other words, the database will continue to improve as we work through it.
But even in its present form, something interesting is beginning to emerge.
A student appearing in one yearbook can eventually connect to a family represented elsewhere in our records. A name can lead to a business, a historic building, a photograph, a newspaper article or another generation of Poplar Bluff residents.
That is ultimately much more valuable than a collection of isolated scanned pages.
Building a Digital Local History Archive
Historic Poplar Bluff remains a small, family-maintained project, and much of this work is being developed as we learn.
We don't expect to digitize everything at once.
Instead, we hope to continue acquiring original Poplar Bluff material when opportunities arise, preserving what we can, documenting its provenance and making as much of it publicly accessible as practical.
The 1929 *Bluff* is a modest beginning.
It was created nearly a century ago so students and families could remember the people and events surrounding one particular school year. Today, those same pages preserve hundreds of individual pieces of Poplar Bluff history.
Our job is simply to make sure they remain available to be discovered.
