Hays Music Store

Commercial 1957-1980s

About

Hays Music Store was a longtime downtown Poplar Bluff business founded by Joel S. Hays and his wife Letha Montgomery Hays in 1957 at 313 Vine Street, in the Begley Building. An accomplished pianist who reportedly performed in 47 of the then-48 states, Joel previously operated The Record Shop on the mezzanine of Fuller's Jewelry on South Main Street from 1947 until injuries from a 1955 automobile accident forced a change of location. Hays Music Store continued as a downtown landmark after Joel's death in 1982.
