Biography
Buena Vista Savell Hays was born September 19, 1891, in Birmingham, Alabama. She attended Belmont College in Tennessee and taught school briefly before her marriage to Paul C. Hays Sr. in Nashville in August 1911. The couple lived in Poplar Bluff, where they raised their family. One newspaper account recalled that Paul and Buena Vista portrayed Joseph and Mary in their church's nativity scene for approximately twenty years.
Buena Vista lived in Poplar Bluff for about 89 years. At the time of her death on November 10, 1984, at age 93, she lived at 903 Kinzer Street. She was survived by her daughter Elsa Beth Hays, son Miles C. Hays, grandchildren and a great-grandchild. Her obituary also identifies her late husband as the former president of the old State Bank of Poplar Bluff.
