Biography

Paul C. Hays Sr. came to Poplar Bluff in 1901 and began working for the State Bank in January 1904 at age sixteen, earning $15 per month. He became assistant cashier in 1909, cashier in 1915, a bank director in 1936, and president in 1949. By the time of his death on January 21, 1966, at age 78, Hays had spent approximately 62 years with the same banking institution and was chairman of the board of State Bank and Trust Company. He also served for many years as secretary of the local High School Board. Hays married Buena Vista Savell in Nashville in 1911. Newspaper records place the family at 316 Euclid Avenue by the 1920s and 1940s. Their children included Paul C. Hays Jr., Miles C. Hays, Joel S. Hays, and Elsa Beth Hays. His exceptionally long banking career made him a familiar figure in Poplar Bluff's twentieth-century business community.
