Iron Mountain Depot
Iron Mountain Depot
The grand Iron Mountain Railroad depot was the heart of Poplar Bluff's railroad era, welcoming thousands of passengers and fueling the city's growth.
Did You Know?
In 1910, over 40 passenger trains stopped at Poplar Bluff daily—more than any other city in Southeast Missouri!
The Story
The Iron Mountain Railroad Depot was more than a building—it was the gateway to Poplar Bluff. Built in 1883, this Victorian structure with its distinctive tower and covered platform symbolized the railroad's role in building the city.
At its peak, dozens of trains passed through daily, bringing settlers, businessmen, and goods to this growing hub. The depot's waiting rooms were separated by class, with an ornate first-class parlor featuring chandeliers and upholstered seating.
The Harvey House restaurant inside served travelers famous meals, prepared fresh and served by the legendary Harvey Girls. Many a romance began with a chance meeting on the depot platform.
As automobile travel grew and rail passenger service declined, the depot fell into disuse. Despite efforts to save it, the building was demolished in 1965. Today, only photographs remain of this once-grand structure.
