Did You Know?

The Daily American Republic reported on July 2, 1942, that the State Bank's newer building would hold a formal opening for public inspection on July 9, 1942.

The Story

The State Bank of Poplar Bluff was chartered in 1901 by a group of local business leaders, including representatives from the Poplar Bluff Land and Abstract Company. The bank originally operated from an earlier building at 301 S Main Street, which served the growing community through the early decades of the 20th century and survived the devastating 1927 tornado. A remarkable story from that tornado tells of a letter that was carried from a desk in the State Bank building all the way to Lutesville, Missouri, 70 miles away, demonstrating the incredible force of the storm.

On July 2, 1942, the Daily American Republic reported that the bank's newer building would hold a formal opening for public inspection on July 9, 1942. Whether this event marked the building's opening for regular business or was primarily a welcoming event for the community to view the new facilities is not entirely clear from the report. The newer building still stands today, though it no longer operates as a bank.
